First Graders Learn About Pilgrim and Indian Traditions
First graders enjoyed learning about pilgrims and Indians while preparing for their own Thanksgiving Feast. Ms. Bailey displayed quilts in her room and showed the first graders how different shapes make the pattern on the quilts. They each made a square of a quilt with construction paper. In Mrs. Howard's room, the children learned to play games such as jacks and marbles like the pilgrim children would have played. Additionally, Mrs. Spencer taught the kids about Indian symbols and what they meant. Finally, Miss Spriggs guided the children as they made a Dream Catcher from a paper plate and yarn. The students spent a morning traveling with their class going from one first grade classroom to another until they completed all the activities.A Beautiful Day
How many children does it take to make history? Over one million, if they are trying to break a world record.
On Thursday, October 8, 2009 teachers and students at Valley Elementary participated in the world's largest shared reading experience sponsored by Jumpstart's Read for the Record. The book for the campaign this year was The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. A total of 301 students were read to on this very, very special day.
4th Grade Community Service Project
Our three Valley Elementary fourth grade classes recently participated in a service project to benefit the Scioto County Homeless Shelter. In response to the shelter's need for towels, our students collected new and gently used bath towels for the residents who temporarily make the Scioto County Homeless Shelter their home. On Friday, September 25th, Maureen Cadogan, director of the shelter, came to the school to talk with our students and accept the donation of towels. During her presentation, Ms. Cadogan explained how the shelter helps homeless individuals and families and described a variety of situations which can lead to homelessness. She expressed her sincere gratitude for the gift of towels, causing the students to learn a valuable lesson in the rewards that can be received by helping others who are less fortunate.
