NEW BOSTON, Ohio (March 5, 2019) - The Greer Museum at the University of Rio Grande hosted its 7th Annual High School Students and Teachers Art Exhibition in February 2019.

The exhibition featured paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramic, photography, 3D printing, and mixed media work from 10 participating students in Southern Ohio and West Virginia. Out of the 110 submission, 62 pieces were selected for inclusion. Students were awarded 10 honorable mentions, three awards of excellence and one best of show prize, with a total of $1,000 cash value. Teachers exhibiting work were awarded an additional $1,000 in the form of art supplies for their classrooms.

The opening reception on Thursday, Feb 28, was attended by approximately 100 guests, including students, teachers, Rio faculty and community and family members.

Erica Cade, a sophomore at Valley High School, won the Best of Show Award for her colored pencil drawing of the drummer from the band Twenty-One Pilots.

"I thought it was an amazing piece. She has a gift with color. She sees it a lot differently than most kids who pick up colored pencils. It looked photographic to me," said Cade's art teacher is Kelly Montgomery. "I am just ecstatic. I couldn't be happier for her."

Kayla Perry of Portsmouth High School, Sammie Jo Salyer of Valley High School and Gabrielle Deacon of Wheelersburg High School all won Awards of Artistic Excellence. Maddi Green and Sydney Chabot, both of Portsmouth High School and Abbey Staiger of Oak Hill High School won Honorable Mention Awards.
