Valley Middle School updated its tardy policy to promote student punctuality during each grading period. With the former policy, if a student arrives late to school more than four times within a quarter, they are referred to the principal for disciplinary action to rectify the issue of tardiness, such as after-school detention and lunch detentions.

VMS is enhancing its tardy policy to reflect the same practices used for students unprepared for class or any other classroom rule violation rather than having a separate discipline policy for tardiness. In the updated approach, students arriving late to class, whether for the first period or any other period throughout the school day, will now have their tardies contribute towards their weekly PBIS break the same as any other classroom violation.

Unlike the previous system, where tardies accumulated for the quarter, this revised policy provides students with a fresh start each week. This positive change aims to instill the importance of punctuality and responsibility among students, encouraging them to arrive on time for school and all classes while giving them a clean slate each week regarding tracking tardies.

This new policy will take effect on Tuesday, 01/16/2024.
